Porsche Boxster 718 S: More powerful than its predecessor – but how does it sound?
A new car that’s more powerful than the one it replaces. That’s all good, right?
Well, the 2.5-litre engine in the new Porsche Boxster 718 S produces 350bhp. So it’s more powerful than the old flat six, and being turbocharged it uses less fuel in the process. Oh, and the engine’s greater torque comes in at lower revs, so it’s even more flexible in gear.
So, yes, all good. But. You knew there was a but.
But listen. Listen to the soundtrack on this here video produced by Autocar magazine.
One of the most beguiling things about the old Boxster S was the banshee howl it came out with as you thraped the throttle. The engine was bigger, it was naturally aspirated… and it sounded lovely.
Have a listen, then. The new turbocharged four-pot still sounds nice. But does it sound Porsche nice? It’s a great car – but something great is missing…
